I have completed Block #20 for the Chester County Criswell Quilt. It is a pie crust pattern that Sharon identified on a Barbara Brackman post.
I've had a bit of fun lately with this quilt, trying to match the patterns on the fabric with the block designs. I thought this fabric was the perfect match - don't those flowers look just like pie crusts?
As other bloggers have mentioned this block was a bit tricky to prepare. I ended up using a very similar method to Miriam. I folded a large piece of freezer paper into 4, traced the design on the inner corner and stapled the folder paper together (being careful not to staple the areas to be cut out.
I then used a scalpel type cutting tool to cut out the grooves. I left a piece on each fold to hold the pattern together.
I then ironed the freezer paper to the print fabric.
I then folded the background into four and finger pressed. Opened and pinned the pie crust down, lining up the freezer paper folds with the background folds to centre the design.
I traced around the design with a frixion pen, tacked down the print fabric, removed the freezer paper and cut the grooves out (beginning the slits with a seam ripper and then using scissors). I started the needle turn applique with the centre circle and worked my way out. Phew! Glad this month's block is a lot easier :)
This is where my photos end so I will finish with Mrs Bobbins instead.
Looks challenging but satisfying......and such a great result. Very cute fabric.
ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful block!
ReplyDeleteGreat fabric choice. Thanks for the tut!
ReplyDeleteGreat method Carole - I have learnt something there - thanks for explaining it so clearly. The turn under for applique must have been pretty narrow - you did a lovely job!
ReplyDeleteI like those little pie crust shapes on your fabric - good find! I'm glad the next block is easier too :)
ReplyDeleteYour applique work is so impressive! I don't think I would have had the courage to try this one. Cute fabric choice!
ReplyDeleteGreat fabric choice for this block.
